Week 42: “Chrysanthemums Bloom”

October 14 to October 20 is the 42nd week of the year. The Solar Term for this week is Cold Dew (Oct 08 - Oct. 22) and the micro-season for this week is “Chrysanthemums Bloom” (Oct 13 - Oct 17). Basho, Issa, Buson, and Reichhold wrote the poems selected for this week.

Week 22: “Safflowers Bloom”

May 27 - June 02 is the 21st week of 2024.  This week, we are in the Solar Term of Grain Buds (May 20 - June 04), and the micro-seasons of “Safflowers Bloom” (May 26 -May 30) and “Wheat Ripens and is Harvested” (May 31 - June 05). Basho, Issa, Buson, Reichhold, and Kerouac wrote the poems selected for this week.

Week 18: “Peonies Bloom”

April 29 to May 05 is the 18th week of 2024.  This week, we are in the Solar Term of Grain Rain (Apr 20 -May 04), and the micro-seasons of “Peonies Bloom” (Apr 30 - May 04).  Basho, Issa, Buson, and Reichhold wrote the poems selected for this week.

Micro-Season: “The Iris Flowers”

On June 26th we will enter the micro-season of “The Iris Flowers”. This is the second micro-season of the season called Summer Solstice. To celebrate this season, we will learn about the iris and then read haiku by Basho, Issa, Shiki, and Ogawa Shushiki.

Micro-Season: “The First Camellia Blossoms” (2022)

We have entered the micro-season of “The First Camellia Blossoms”. This is the first micro-season of the mini-season of First Winter. As a way to celebrate this season, we will learn about the camellia flower and its symbolism. Then we will read camellia-themed haiku from Issa, Basho, Buson, and Shiki.

Micro-Season: “The Chrysanthemum Flowers”(2022)

We have entered the micro-season of “The Chrysanthemum Flowers”. This is the second micro-season of the mini-season of Cold Dew. As a way to celebrate this season, we will learn about the chrysanthemum flower, explore its cultural significance, and then read haiku by Basho, Issa, and Buson.
