Connecting to nature through poetry and prose
April 22 to April 28 is the 17th week of 2024. This week, we are in the Solar Term of Grain Rain (Apr 20 -May 04). The micro-seasons for this week are “First Reeds Sprout” (Apr 20 - Apr 24) and “Last Frost, Rice Seedlings Grow” (Apr 25 - Apr 29). Basho, Issa, Buson, Reichhold, Rosenstock, and Zaishiki wrote the poems selected for this week.
November 13 - Nov 19 is the 46th week of the Gregorian calendar. During this week, we are still in the Solar Term of First Winter and have entered into the micro-season of “The Earth First Freezes” (Nov. 13 - Nov 17). The haiku selected for this week were written by Basho, Issa, Kaga no Chiyo, Jorge Luis Borges, Reichhold, and Kerouac.
We have entered the micro-season of “The Frost Stops the Rice Grows”, which is the second micro-season of the mini-season of Grain Rain. To honor this season we will look into the trends in spring frost and read haiku by Issa, Basho, and Buson.
The mini season of Major Snow is marked by a drop in temperature and a noticeable decline in daylight. With this shift, frost is now a common occurrence. As a way to celebrate this season, we will look at how frost is made and then read some poetry by Issa, Buson, Toshimi, and Teasdale.
As we near the end of October, we welcome the mini season of Frost Descent. At this time, we reflect on the impermanent nature of all things.
