October 07 to October 13 is the 41st week of the year. This period falls within the meteorological and astronomical fall seasons in the northern hemisphere. The Solar Term for this week is Cold Dew (Oct 08 - Oct. 22) and the micro-season for this week is “Wild Geese Return” (Oct 08 - Oct 12). We have entered the micro-season of “The Geese Arrive”. This is the first micro-season of the mini-season of Cold Dew. As a way to celebrate this season, we will learn about the White-Fronted Goose and then read haiku by Issa, Basho, Takaha Shugyo, and Buson.
We have entered the micro-season of “Geese Fly North”. To honor this season we look at bird migration patterns and read haiku by Basho, Issa, Shiki, and Buson.
The Canadian Geese migration is one of those amazing feats of the natural world. When you think about this, and then watch them fly in their V formation, it makes sense that poets like Mary Oliver and Wendell Berry would incorporate them into their verse.
